These Terms of Service (“Terms”) apply to the String mobile application and the String website at getstring.app (together, the “Service”). Please read them before creating an account or purchasing a subscription.
String is operated by Mr Jermaine Johnson, trading as String (“we”, “us”, “our”). Our contact email is support@getstring.app and our business contact address is Mr Jermaine Johnson, String, PO Box 735, CATERHAM, CR3 4FE.
1. What String provides
String is a subscription-based language-learning service, offering curated lessons, listening and speaking practice, learning progress tools and selected AI-assisted exercises. Features, language availability and lesson content may change as we improve the Service.
String is an educational tool. It does not guarantee fluency, test results, qualifications or particular learning outcomes. AI-generated responses and feedback may sometimes be inaccurate or incomplete.
2. Eligibility and accounts
String is intended for users aged 4 and above (4+). Parental consent is not required to use the Service.
You must provide accurate account information and keep your login credentials secure. You are responsible for activity on your account, except where caused by our failure to take reasonable care or by circumstances outside your control. Contact us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.
You may not impersonate another person or misuse another person's account. You can delete your account through the in-app Profile area or contact us if you cannot access it.
3. Subscriptions, pricing and free trials
String offers monthly and annual auto-renewing subscriptions that unlock paid learning features. The current price, billing period, currency, applicable taxes, and any introductory offer are shown to you in the relevant app-store purchase screen before you confirm your purchase. The purchase-screen information prevails if there is any difference in displayed prices or offers.
If you are eligible for a free trial, the offer and its exact duration will appear before you subscribe. When an eligible free trial ends, your subscription will normally begin charging automatically unless you cancel before the trial expires. Free trials and promotions are subject to the eligibility rules displayed by Apple or Google and may not be available to everyone.
Subscriptions ordinarily renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless cancelled. The applicable store is responsible for processing your payment. We do not collect or store your full payment-card details.
If you choose an annual subscription, the annual amount is normally charged upfront for the applicable year. Any price changes will be handled in accordance with the relevant platform's notification and consent rules and applicable consumer law.
4. How to cancel or manage a subscription
You can manage or cancel a subscription through the Manage subscription option in your String profile or directly through the store where you made the purchase:
- Apple: Apple subscription management
- Google Play: Google Play subscription management
Cancel before the next charge to avoid a renewal; follow any cancellation deadline shown by the store. Cancellation normally prevents future renewals, while paid access may continue until the end of the current billing period unless the store or applicable law provides otherwise.
Deleting your String account or uninstalling the app does not automatically cancel a subscription. Cancel the subscription through Apple or Google first if you no longer want to be billed.
5. Refunds and statutory consumer rights
If you purchased through Apple or Google, you can request a refund through the relevant store's support or refund process. Refund eligibility depends on the applicable purchase terms and law; your legal rights are not reduced by these Terms or a store policy.
If you are a UK consumer, you may have statutory cancellation, conformity and other consumer rights relating to digital services and content. Whether a 14-day cancellation right applies, or whether it has been validly lost following immediate provision of digital content, depends on the purchase circumstances and any legally required consent and acknowledgement. Nothing in these Terms removes rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
For questions about charges or access, contact support@getstring.app.
6. Appropriate use
You agree not to use String to:
- break the law, infringe other people's rights, harass others or submit abusive or unlawful content;
- access another person's account or personal information without permission;
- interfere with app security, bypass access restrictions, reverse-engineer protected services where prohibited by law, or intentionally overload our systems;
- extract or redistribute substantial parts of the lessons, audio or other protected learning content without authorisation.
You are responsible for the text and other content you choose to enter or record. Please avoid submitting highly sensitive personal information into AI-assisted practice features.
7. Your content and our learning materials
You retain any rights you have in original sentences, messages, recordings and other content you submit. You give us a limited, non-exclusive permission to process that content and share it with relevant service providers only as needed to operate the features you use, provide feedback, maintain security and fulfil these Terms, as described in our Privacy Policy.
String's lessons, design, branding, generated materials and other Service content are owned by us or licensed to us, subject to applicable third-party rights. A subscription gives you a limited, personal, non-transferable right to use the Service while your access is active. It does not transfer ownership of the materials to you.
8. AI-assisted features
Some exercises use external AI services to transcribe speech, generate practice responses or assess language usage. These outputs may be imperfect and are intended for learning support rather than professional translation, medical, legal or other high-stakes advice.
Use your judgment when relying on generated content. Further information about data sent to AI providers is in the Privacy Policy.
9. Availability and changes to String
We aim to keep String available and functional but cannot promise uninterrupted access. We may carry out maintenance, fix security issues or make reasonable changes to the Service. We will not remove legally required protections or deprive you of statutory remedies through this clause.
If a material change significantly affects a paid feature during your current subscription, we will handle it fairly and provide any notices, remedies or cancellation options required by applicable law.
10. Suspending or closing accounts
We may suspend access where reasonably necessary to protect users, investigate suspected misuse or respond to legal or security requirements. For serious or repeated breaches, we may terminate access, acting reasonably and providing notice where practicable and lawful.
You may request deletion of your String account through the app or by contacting us. Account deletion may remove your saved learning progress and other account information permanently. As explained above, deleting an account does not cancel any active store subscription.
11. Responsibility and liability
We are responsible for losses that are a foreseeable result of our failure to comply with these Terms or to exercise reasonable care and skill, subject to applicable law.
We do not exclude or limit liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or your statutory consumer rights.
The Service is provided for personal learning. We are not responsible for losses arising from business use that we have not agreed to support, to the extent permitted by law.
12. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy describes how personal information is processed, including in speaking exercises, subscriptions, crash reporting and account deletion. It is a separate notice and does not turn all processing into consent.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may revise these Terms when the Service, law or our operations change. The updated Terms will be published with a revised date. We will give appropriate notice of material changes where required by law and will not unfairly change the bargain for an existing paid subscription.
14. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, subject to any mandatory consumer protections applicable where you live. If you are a consumer, nothing in this section takes away your statutory rights to bring claims in a court that has jurisdiction under applicable law.
If something goes wrong, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it promptly. This does not prevent you from using any available statutory or regulatory complaint or dispute procedure.
15. Contact
